DR promoted the relief of the African epidemic.

It stated that WHO recognizes that traditional, complementary and alternative medicine has many benefits. Africa has a long history of traditional medicine and practitioners, and they play an important role in providing care to the public. Artemisia (Artemisia annua) and other medicinal plants are considered as possible treatment drugs against 2019 coronavirus, and their efficacy and side effects should be tested. People in Africa should use drugs that have been rigorously screened like the rest of the world. Even if the therapy comes from traditional practice and natural therapy, it is crucial to determine its efficacy and safety through rigorous clinical trials.

In 2000, at the fiftieth session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, African Government Ministers of Health adopted a resolution urging Member States to provide evidence on the safety, efficacy and quality of traditional medicine. Countries also agreed to carry out relevant research and require national drug regulatory agencies to approve drugs that meet international standards, including products that follow strict research protocols and undergo testing and clinical trials. These studies usually require hundreds of people to conduct under the supervision of national regulatory agencies, and may take months to speed up the process.

The WHO Regional Office for Africa stated that the organization is working with research institutions to select traditional pharmaceutical products that can investigate the clinical efficacy and safety of the treatment of coronavirus in 2019. In addition, the organization will continue to support countries in exploring the role of traditional health practitioners in preventing, controlling, and early detection of viruses and moving cases to health facilities.
